...and found L Oppleman's. Incredible. It was a pawn shop. It was the friendliest pawnshop ever.

And the gang at Oppleman's was all that and a bag of fritters. They helped us find a place to eat breakfast. They told mom where she should go to get her hair done. All was right with the world.

...L. Oppleman's as "the oldest pawn shop in America"?

According to Harold Dambrot of the Four Aces Pawnshop in New York City, that does, indeed, appear to be the case. L. Oppleman was founded in 1890 - and when Dambrot initiated a search for the nation's oldest pawnshop prior to the national convention of the National Pawnbrokers Association last year, 111 years of service (now 112) stood untouched.
